Concrete’s Characteristic Temperature under Combined Heating and Loading
Abstract
Due to the complex behavior of concrete at high temperatures, the traditional design assumption that concrete has full strength if the maximum temperature is below 500°C and that it has no strength beyond 500°C may be insufficient. High stress levels have the capability to induce failure well before the concrete core reaches this threshold temperature. This suggests that other indicators are needed to predict concrete failure at high temperatures. Therefore, a new concept, Characteristic Temperature, was defined—it signifies the temperature where the concrete strains caused by sustained loads experiences a transition to rapid contraction
