Ballistic Performance of High Strength Steel and Aluminum Plates Against Spherical Tungsten Fragments
Abstract
This research has shown that great progress has been made in numerical simulations for the perforation problems. The simulations have become reliable and robust, capable of dealing with the complex perforation problems. For the analyses, the material modelling will become a critical issue for the simulation of the performance of some materials. As long as a reasonable material model is provided, the numerical solver are capable of adequately dealing with perforation problems. The study showed that, for example, a very advanced fracture model is needed for the hard metals such as A500T while for 2024-T3 aluminum alloy, even a simple empirical material model will give reasonable results
