Strain Energy Release Rate Calculations of Adhesively Bonded Joints Using Spring Foundation Models
Abstract
This study shows two semi-analytical models for rapid joint sizing and design, where the adhesive is modeled as a foundation of continuous linear shear and normal springs, and how the virtual crack closure technique (VCCT) has been applied to both models to obtain the strain energy release rate (SERR). One method replicates the VCCT method but with a finite thickness and continuous degrees of freedom, while the other looks at energy considerations to calculate the SERR of a point based on only values evaluated at that point. The methods are compared with each other and with 2-D plane strain finite element models.
