Ideally a reference artefact, especially a Standard Reference Material is a material having the following attributes: â‹… No dependence of property on small changes of composition and microstructure; â‹… No strong temperature dependence of thermal property; â‹… No phase and structural transformation over the temperature range of application â‹… Physical and structural uniformity, isotropy; â‹… Unaffected by possible mechanical treatment; â‹… No dependence of apparent/ thermal property on size, boundary conditions etc, â‹… Stability during repeating tests, non-dependence on thermal history â‹… Representative specimens â‹… Ease of manufacture and low price;
