Amplification and Filtering of Shear Horizontal Waves Using Flexural Resonance-Based Metamaterials

Abstract


We investigate the use of a flexural resonance based metamaterial to focus shearhorizontal modes in a thin-walled structure. Shear horizontal waves have many advantages for structural heath monitoring, but their low amplitude and in-plane displacements can make them difficult to detect with sufficient signal-to-noise ratios. Through simulations, we demonstrate that resonance based elastic metamaterials can be used to amplify these modes prior to capture.
