High Strain Rate Response of Rocks under Dynamic Loading Using Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar
Abstract
In the present work, dynamic stress-strain response of two rocks from different regions in India, e.g. Kota sandstone and Dholpur sandstone have been investigated through split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) test at different strain rates for the first time in the literature. The dry and saturated density, specific gravity, static compressive strength and tensile strength values of the rocks have also been determined. Petrological study of the rocks has been carried out through scanning electron microscope test. It is observed from the stress-strain response of the rocks that the peak stress increases with increasing strain rate. Dynamic strength increase factors for these rocks have been determined by comparing the dynamic and the static peak compressive stress values. A correlation equation has been proposed herein for the dynamic strength increase factor of sandstone rocks
