

Research Progress of Honeycomb Core Failure Analysis for Sandwich Structures
Abstract
The failure analysis of honeycomb cores is necessary for honeycomb sandwich structures’ quantitative design. It is related to the method of creating the numerical model and the failure mode and corresponding failure criteria. There are mainly two ways to simulate honeycomb cores at present. One is micromechanical model, in which the honeycomb wall is modeled by shell elements. The other is macro model, in which the honeycomb core is considered as an equivalent orthotropic body. Shear failure and compressive failure are honeycomb cores’ main failure mode. At present the failure analysis results do not correspond with the test results precisely. The failure analysis methods under complex loads still need to be further investigated.
