Abstract

The objective of this work is to numerically investigate the elastoplastic behavior of functionally graded foams. We propose a 3D model of functionally graded foams based on the tetrakaidecahedral open cell. The variation in the cell wall thickness induces density gradient. Based on the finite element method, macroscopic elastic constants and initial yield stress against the relative density and grade variation are discussed in this paper. Through a systematic study we find that the grade variation significantly affects the Young’s modulus and the initial yield stress of the foams.
