Characterization of In-Plane Fiber Architecture in Z-Pinned Unidirectional Carbon-Fiber Preforms

J. ZHANG, J.Q. ZHANG, L. ZHAO

Abstract

In this study a comprehensive investigation on the changes of microstructure in z-pinned unidirectional carbon-fiber preforms caused by the z-pinning by dry process is carried out. Analysis of digital images of the local fiber architecture in a unit cell is taken. Distortion length and distortion width which characterize the local microstructure are measured. The fiber distortion model is used to describe the inhomogeneous fiber volume fraction and in-plane fiber deflection angle due to z-pinning.
