Abstract

Hysteresis behavior of shape memory alloys (SMAs) is highly important for design and applicability of these materials in active structures. Especially the damping behavior depends strongly on the hysteretic behavior. Experimental investigations show the influences of stress on the hysteretic cycle according to phenomena like elastic stored energy, interfacial energy, elastic energy related to an external stress field and work of friction. The current study shows a model which is capable to investigate the influence of an external applied stress field on the hysteretic cycle according to a recently developed statistical mechanics method.
