Determination of Fracture Properties in Thermal Barrier Coating Systems by Non-standard Bending Tests

P.F. ZHAO, F.L. SHANG

Abstract

The fracture properties of plasma sprayed thermal barrier coatings have been investigated. In this work, specimens in as-sprayed condition and after thermal oxidation have been prepared. Non-standard four point and three point bending tests that can generate a single interface crack, have been conducted at room temperature and at the ambient temperature of 100°C, respectively. Examinations of fractured surfaces by scanning electron microscopy and energy disperse spectroscopy have been used to probe the failure modes. From the load-deflection curves of specimens, the fracture toughness for stable crack propagation, in terms of energy release rate, was estimated reliably from analytical considerations.
