Abstract

On the analysis of the symptoms and causes of culture shock our students encountered at Northumbria University in the UK, this paper puts forward the following suggestions to reduce the influence of culture shock: 1. for home universities, language skills and intercultural knowledge and skills training before going abroad is an effective measure; 2. for oversea students, to be open-minded and have a clear learning objective is the subjective motivation to integrate into the local social life as soon as possible;3. For host universities, the efforts to create wider social activities are the necessary condition.
