On the Screwball Comedy Model of the Little Mermaid

Guang ZENG

Abstract

The animation film the Little Mermaid relates a story of how Emile the little mermaid boldly chased a human prince, braving all the obstacles and finally winning his love. The success of this film lies not only in its deconstruction of the classic fairy tale the Little Seamaid, which rewriting caters to the taste of a wider popularity, but also in the screwball comedy pattern that it follows. From the aspects of social status, gender characteristics and plot, this paper will discuss the screwball comedy model that it follows, while making comparisons between the animation film and its original fairy tale.
