On the Association Between the Cultural Awareness, Cultural Teaching and English Reading Comprehension

Abstract


The cultural knowledge of English learners plays an important role in their English reading comprehension. Numerous researches showed that the mastery of cultural knowledge can increase learner’s reading comprehension. Both quantitative research and classroom observation are applied in the present study. The subjects of the study are the sophomore English majors of Sichuan Agricultural University. The statistical analyses are used to find out the association between the cultural awareness, cultural teaching and English reading comprehension. The findings indicated that most of the English majors have a weaker cultural awareness, and the cultural teaching in reading classes is simple in form and lack of depth. Based on the results, the author proposes “the cultural awareness should be cultivated in English reading class in Agricultural University”, and provides some suggestions for “the mode of cultural teaching”.
