NUMERICAL STUDY ON PROJECTILE STOPPAGE INSIDE THE GUN BARREL
Abstract
The effect of projectile stoppage inside the gun barrel is simulated using unsteady CFD simulation carried out using ANSYS Fluent Software. Nominal in-bore motion of the projectile is simulated using moving zones with sliding mesh approach. A special in-house developed user defined function is used to implement 1 DOF motion of the projectile. Abel- Noble equation of state is implemented in order to capture internal ballistics accurately. Projectile base pressure obtained from CFD simulation shows close agreement with the analytical data. The projectile stoppage is simulated by decoupling mesh motion from 1- DOF model. A pressure rise at the base of the projectile is estimated for stoppage of the projectile.
