Material Characterization of Ballistic Roma Plastilina No. 1 Clay.
Abstract
Compression tests were conducted for Roma Plastilina No.1 (RP #1) to characterize the material responses as functions of temperatures and loading rates. Due to barreling of the specimen, the measured stress-strain curves were not representative of the material stress-strain curve. Numerical analysis was carried out to understand the barreling effects and correlate the measured stress-strain curves and material response. A parametric study was then conducted to find a set of material parameters accounting for strain rate, temperature and tensile properties (different from compression properties) to best match the impact and drop tests.
