Influence of the Obturator Breakage on the Sabot Separation of an APFSDS Round

NICOLAS ECHES

Abstract

These works had for purpose to study how a dissymmetry in the obturator breakage during the sabot discard may affect the point of impact of a large caliber APFSDS round. For that we used a detailed 3D FEM model to simulate the behavior of different configurations of obturators, with configurations adapted to emphasized symmetrical and non-symmetrical behaviors. The results show that an influence on the Target Impact Dispersion may exist, which may vary from negligible to noticeable on the overall TID.
