An On-Board Recording Technique to Correlate Simultaneous Leeward and Windward Pressure Measurements to Ground-Based Aerodynamic Range Measurements
Abstract
ARL's recent flight demonstration represents a novel onboard recorder and integration technique that allowed for the first-ever recorded simultaneous measurement of both leeward and windward pressure and ground-based aerodynamic range correlation. Wake flow pressure measurement represents a critical state previously elusive to researchers except for wind tunnels hampered by sting effects or computational fluid dynamics predictions using unverified turbulence models. This paper describes the advancements necessary to further the state-of-the-art capabilities toward readily available and cost-effective research tools and diagnostics. These measurement techniques demonstrate a unique capability to validate models used to design future missions to Mars or the next guided swarm of munitions.
