Modified Alekseevskii-Tate Model for Rod Penetration of Porous Targets
Abstract
The Alekseevskii-Tate (AT) model of long rod penetration is modified to treat compressibility in porous targets. Crushing of pores is modeled with a simple compaction model, as previously applied to steady-state jet penetration. The only difference from the AT equations is an added porosity term in the usual Bernoulli equation. The model is exercised for relatively soft targets, for which it is applicable to the hydrodynamic stage of penetration (at sufficient velocities), after which the slowed and eroded residual penetrator may continue to penetrate in a non-eroding mode (not treated here).
