Ballistic Resistance of Semi-Infinite and Finite-Thickness Adobe Targets
Abstract
The authors of the present paper have published results for the semi-infinite penetration of metallic spheres of different diameters into adobe over a range of impact velocities that also show the scalability of such experiments [Int. J. Impact Engineering 75 (2015) 27-29]. In the present contribution, we review our earlier results for semi-infinite targets and complement them with so far unpublished data concerning the perforation of finitethickness adobe targets by spherical projectiles of the same type. Different theoretical approaches to the obtained penetration data are possible. As will be discussed in some detail, the penetration results in the rigid-body regime could be interpreted with the help of force-law approaches as well as by shock wave theory.
