Numerical Simulations on Spherical Fragments Penetrating LY12 Aluminum Alloy Target

XINLIAN REN, GANG LI, FEI SHEN

Abstract

To investigate the characteristics of spherical fragments penetrating LY12 aluminum alloy target, the penetration process of the spherical fragments with different diameters into LY12 aluminum alloy target was simulated by LS-DYNA software. Through numerical simulation, the failure modes of the target and the penetration ability of fragments were analyzed, and also the ballistic limiting velocities were obtained. The results show that the chief failure modes of the target impacted by spherical fragments are petal type failure and plugged failure. The penetration capacity of fragments increase when one has a bigger diameter, and the ballistic limiting velocities are in good agreement with test results.
