Influence of Crack Distribution on the Responses of the Homogenized Unidirectional Composites
Abstract
In this research, the influence of the number of cracks and the location of a crack on the responses of composites is studied. The representative unit cells are divided into two groups. In the first group, one crack, two cracks, three cracks, and five cracks, respectively, are implemented in individual RUC, respectively. In the second group, a crack is placed at different locations in four separate RUCs. Each RUC is subject to compression, tension in the x direction, compression, tension in the y direction, and shear deformation. The results show that cracks propagate in some RUC under tension and cracks propagate in some RUCs under compression. The interaction can be observed from the cracks that are in close distance. The results show the crack number and crack distribution has significant influence on the responses of crack evolution inside microstructures.
