The train's security and reliability get more and more attention because of its continuously increasing speed. In order to find out the damage or crack of the train's structural components such as car body, bogie, vehicle mounted equipment and connections like weld joints, work out safety protection measures and avoid the train fault, one of the most effective way is real-time monitoring. Fiber Bragg Grating is one of the most rapidly developing fiber passive components in recent years. Due to its advantages, for instance, immunity to EMI, long life-time and multiplexing capabilities, FBG has been successfully used as sensors and monitors of the train's structural components' physical quantities such as temperature, strain, velocity and acceleration so far. FBG sensing technology adopted in the real-time monitoring of structural condition of high-speed train which is at service, could discover the damage to the train's structure timely, sense the fault position exactly, and ensure the high-speed train working safely, reliably and efficiently. This paper discusses the necessities of structural health monitoring for high-speed train, reviewing the principles of FBG sensor and its application in railway trains, and prospects the application of the FBG sensor in structural health monitoring of high-speed train.
