A method based on modal properties for determining the lateral distribution of bridges is proposed. Firstly, the theoretical basis for determining lateral distribution of bridge by using modal properties (frequency and modal shapes) is illustrated. The lateral distribution results can be obtained through modal flexibility, and the calculation formulas are deduced. Secondly, the applicability and accuracy of the proposed method are compared with finite element analysis and traditional simplified method for simply supported slabs. Finally, the modal flexibility-based lateral distribution calculating method is applied to identify the damage occurrence and location for lateral connection elements. The proposed method can not only present a new strategy for determining distribution factors in bridge design, but also provide an effective and useful approach for condition assessment of bridge.
