Influence of Bending Loads on Ultrasonic Guided-Waves Based Structural Health Monitoring of Laminated Composite Structures
Abstract
In this paper, an investigation is carried out to understand the influence of applied bending loads on ultrasonic guided-waves propagating in laminated composite structures. Composite coupons fabricated from unidirectional plies are instrumented with piezoelectric transducers, and subjected to three point bending test. Load effects on sensing signal parameters such as signal amplitude and phase are studied for wave propagation paths along the fiber direction, as well as paths that are transverse to the fiber direction. Load compensation strategy for addressing load influence on signal amplitude is proposed.
