Influence of Concentration-Dependent Elastic Modulus and Charge or Discharge Rate on Tensile Stress in Anode

Abstract


In this paper, the effects of concentration-dependent elastic modulus and charge or discharge rate on the diffusion induced tensile stress in anode are studied. It has been found that tensile stress would generate due to the non-uniform distribution of lithium ions during lithiation and delithiation process. Applying a faster charge or discharge rate could induce a higher maximum tensile stress. The recent study of compositiondependent modulus for graphite and silicon has showed that neglect of the elastic modulus stiffening or softening would induce an considerably underestimate or overestimation of maximum tensile stress and the concentration-dependent elastic modulus must be considered and the rate especially the discharge rate needs to be appropriately controlled from the tensile point of view.
