Abstract

The surface modification of nano-TiO2/Ag+ particles with titanate coupling agent and its effect on the properties of composite high density polyethylene (HDPE) sheets were studied. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize and analyze the unmodified and modified nano-TiO2/Ag+ particles. The dispersion of the powders in the sheet was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the hydrophilic property of the sheet was measured by the contact angle measurement instrument. Results show that the lipophilic degree of the modified nano-TiO2/Ag+ powder can reach to more than 60% when the NDZ-201 is added by 2%. FT-IR investigation indicates that the titanate coupling agent can be chemically bonded on the surface of nano-TiO2/Ag+. Moreover, XRD shows that the modification did not lead to structural changes of the powder. The dispersability of modified powder and its compatibility with HDPE has been significantly improved´╝Ä With the nano- TiO2/Ag+ content increases, the hydrophobic property of the composite HDPE sheet is enhanced.
