44. Durability Assessment of Aircraft Structures: A Case Study for Crack Path Prediction in an F-35 Structural Component Using XFA3D

Abstract


Aggressive performance and weight optimization are driving the
aerospace industry towards the use of advanced numerical simulation
tools coupled with a reduced number of structural tests for design certification
and durability assessment. Traditionally the structural analysis
is done by handbook lookup or using simplified models with empirical
parameters. This approach is not adequate for airframe structures
featuring complex geometric details and loading conditions. Given the
escalating costs associated with test-driven certification and qualification
procedures, there is an immediate need for verified computational
software to perform crack growth simulation under monotonic and cyclic
loading.
