32. Prediction of Failure Envelopes for Particulate Reinforced Composites

Abstract


This paper presents theoretically obtaining failure envelopes for particulate reinforced composites. This is achieved by estimating the stress field in the matrix phase based on the Eshelby method [1] for a spherical inclusion in infinite matrix along with the self-consistent approximation [2] that determines the effective elastic modulus of the composite. Using the estimated stress fields, the von Mises failure criterion is used in terms of externally applied stresses at the far field and a set of the external stresses that results in the von Mises yield stress is found. For biaxial normal stresses, failure envelopes can be drawn by varying the volume fractions.
