16. Development of CFRP Wrapping Joint Model for Concrete Pipe with Reduced Wall Thickness
Abstract
Buried conventional concrete pipes (RCP) have been widely used as the sanitary sewer, and accounted for an approximately half of civil infrastructure in the United States of America. Recently, flexible concrete pipe, called as thin wall (TW) concrete pipe, has been developed to reduce production cost while keeping pipe strength (Park et al., 2015). Park et al. conducted three-edge-bearing tests for the flexible concrete pipes to investigate their stiffnesses and performance. The results from their tests show that the flexible concrete pipes have sufficient stiffness and flexibility. Even though proven performance of the flexible concrete pipe, it is not validated because not appropriate joint system exists for the thin-wall concrete pipe. Conventional bell and spigot joint system cannot be designed on the ends of the thin wall concrete pipe, due to reduced wall thickness, compared to the conventional RCP design standard (ASTM C76, 2015).
