Analysis of Control Characteristics of Grid Voltage Support Methods Using Energy Storage in Microgrid

Abstract


Two operation modes which are grid-connected mode and islanding mode exist in microgrid. When the grid fault happens, the microgrid changes the control strategy from grid-connected mode to the islanding mode. In the islanding mode, the energy storage will be controlled as a voltage source to supply the voltage of the loads or the new energy generation equipment. This paper analyzes the control characteristics of the energy storage with the function of grid voltage support. Three types of grid voltage support control strategies which are V/f control, droop control, and improved droop control are proposed. The control strategies are realized in the voltage source converter in energy storage equipment. The influence factors of the control characteristics of grid voltage support methods are analyzed in different types of grid voltage support control strategies. Furthermore, the characteristics of dynamic response process and steady state are presented by using the closed loop control diagrams. A comparison of three types of grid voltage support control strategies are also presented in this paper. Based on these analyses, the control characteristic of different grid voltage support methods is obtained. Simulation investigation results are finally provided to verify the analysis result.
