Analytical Estimation of Impact Damage and CAI Strength
Abstract
Significance of the damage to low velocity foreign object impact in quasi-isotropic composite laminates and the residual compressive strength of the damaged plates are theoretically evaluated to estimate the CAI strength of the composite laminates. The damaged portion is modelled as equally spaced multiple circular plates without delamination opening which is a rough but mechanically acceptable approximation of the impact damage for damage growth stage as well as the compression behavior of damaged plates. Superposition technique is used to derive approximate closed-form formula for both the impact and compression problem. The expressions of the energy release rate derived as a function of geometrical and material parameters are able to predict the damage initiation and growth of both problems.
