Homogenization of Viscoelastic Composite Reinforced Woven Flax Fibers

Natural fiber reinforced composites (NFRC) are used in several applications because of their good specific properties, eco-friendly characteristic and low cost. Moreover, due to the viscoelastic behavior of natural fibers, NFRC could present high damping capacity that is an important characteristic required in several structures supporting high dynamic load. This work aims to investigate the viscoelastic behavior of woven natural fiber reinforced composite, especially, its damping property. Firstly, an analytical homogenization model of woven natural fibers is established. This homogenization model is based on iso-strain model and correspondence principle. Experimental tests were carried out in order to validate the homogenization model. The result shows a good agreement between the homogenization model and the experimentation. By using the model, the properties, especially the damping capacity, of woven natural fiber reinforced composites was determined and compared with other synthetic fiber reinforced composites (SFRC).
