BALLISTIC LIMIT RESEARCH OF REACTIVE PROJECTILE IMPACTING THIN ALUMINUM PLATE
Abstract
There exists a ballistic limit velocity when projectile impact on plate, which is a widely recognized terminal effect of projectiles in previous studies. However, it is often difficult to analyze the impact process of the reactive projectile on the plate. Its complexity lies in the fact that the process of the reactive projectile penetrating the plate depends not only on its kinetic energy, but also on the chemical energy released by the reactive material under strong transient load. In this paper, Ballistic limit behavior of reactive projectile impacting thin aluminum plate was studied, ANSYS/LSDYNA was used to obtain the ballistic limit of reactive projectile impacting thin aluminum plate. Meanwhile, based on the critical stress/strain rate activation hypothesis of reactive materials, the ballistic limit of reactive projectile is analyzed by one-dimensional shock wave theory. The simulation results are in good agreement with the theoretical calculation.
