Parametric Design of a Muzzle Brake by Computational Fluid Dynamics to Reduce Crew Noise Exposure During Training
Abstract
A programme of work was undertaken to redesign the L118 105mm Light Gun muzzle brake to offer a potential solution for reducing the firing impulse noise (FIN) experienced by the gun detachment whilst operating the platform during training exercises. The key drivers for this study were compliance with the UK authority on the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 whilst maintaining minimal effect on the platform from a reduction in the muzzle brake efficiency. On completion of this study two muzzle brake designs were presented that could potentially reduce the FIN level experienced by the gun detachment. These designs were recommended for further study and have since been taken forward for prototyping and field testing during 2016.
