Abstract

This paper presents the numerical simulation of the response of composite sandwich plate on explosive charge by fragment impact, representing that composite sandwich plate structure has good capability of explosion resistance. The theory studies show that the composite sandwich plate structure with “hard-soft-hard” can effectively reduce the internal pressure of the explosive and improve the capacity of explosion resistance from the fragment impact. The results of simplified numerical models, carried out using Ansys/AutoDYN, are validated with experiments. Two single-layer metal plates and four composite sandwich plate structures are chosen as the barrier of cylindrical explosive charge Comp-B. The internal peak pressure of explosive and the transmission coefficient of shock wave under the impact of tungsten alloy fragment at 1710m/s velocity were investigated. The critical initiation velocities of fragments for explosive with different barriers were obtained. The simulation results indicate that the composite sandwich plate structures have smaller transmission coefficients and smaller internal pressure of explosive than single-layer metal plates. The predictions provide an insight into the vulnerability and security of warhead.
