Combined Approach For Characterization of Shaped Charge Jet Penetration 2

Abstract


This paper presents a combined approach for characterization of shaped charge jet penetration, that incorporates both hydrocode simulation and experimentally fitted analytical models. The implementation of the proposed approach is demonstrated based on a representative 45mm caliber shaped charge. The AUTODYN Eulerian solver, with a special simulation setup, is used to accurately derive the jet mass-velocity distribution, along with other relevant jet parameters. It is shown that based on this jet data, and using the "breakup distance" approximation, the jet particulation mechanism can be properly fitted. This calibrated jet data is then used for calculating the penetration cratering characteristics, i.e. the time-resolved penetration process and the final crater profiles. The calculated results are compared to experimental ones showing very good agreement.
