Cycloaliphatic Epoxy -Silica Nanocomposite Provided from Perhydropolysilazane
Abstract
Epoxy-silica nanocomposites were synthesized with an asymmetric epoxy monomer, CEL3000, which have a glycidyl group and an alicyclic epoxy group, and a combination of amine and thiol compounds, as an initiator and a hardner, respectively, in presence of perhydropolysilazane, PHPS. Highly transparent epoxy-silica nanocomposites with clear microphase separation of epoxy and silica domains were synthesized at various PHPS content. The competition of curing of epoxy groups were considered by FT-IR investigation. PHPS disturbed the reaction of thiol because of the interaction between PHPS and 2° amino group of the initiator. Transparency and water vapor barrier property were quantitatively measured for the composites. It was found that the interaction between PHPS and 2° amino group of the initiator improved the transparency of epoxy resin. Water vapor barrier property of CEL3000 resin was improved by not only by the increasing of path length of water vapor but also the reduction of hydroxy group in the resin owing to the capping with SiH group of PHPS.
