Modeling the Microbond Test of Different Sizes of Droplets to Quantify the Failure Properties of Fiber-Matrix Interface
Abstract
Carbon fiber reinforced plastic composite exhibits very complex interactive failure mechanisms. To conduct the progressive damage analysis, FEA software which could simulate large scale detailed models including interfaces is required. We have developed the large-scale parallel FEM program which analysis the model using cohesive elements. It is also required to measure properties of interface accurately in order to simulate the strength of interface. The microbond test is one of techniques for evaluating failure of the fiber–matrix interface. Cohesive properties include several parameters that define the stiffness and damage. Therefore, in this study, we have modeled different sizes of droplets to quantify material properties of the fiber-matrix interface. We have explored the failure properties of the fiber–matrix interface by comparing the experiment results and the three-dimensional analysis results using the software that we have developed.
