Double-Bubble Fuselage Subcomponent Experimental Testing to Support the D8 Composite Fuselage Design
Abstract
The design of the D8 wide fuselage consists of a vertically joined dual-lobe fuselage cross-section. Vertical structural members run down the centerline of the fuselage. Connecting these vertical structural members to the fuselage skin is a so-called “Yâ€-joint. The structural “Yâ€-joint of the double-bubble fuselage is composed of a co-cured fuselage skin with a 3-dimensional (3-D) woven composite preform. objective of the subcomponent test is to create characteristic stresses within the “Yâ€- joint and keel, similar to what will be observed in a full-barrel fuselage under cabin pressure loading. To this end, a custom self-reacting test fixture is manufactured to permit introduction of pressure loads into the subcomponent skin via pressure bladders. Experimental boundary conditions provide hoop skin loads and vertical tension rod attachment loading on the keel. Strain, force, and bladder pressure data are collected and compared to finite element predictions for multiple fuselage pressures. Aspects of manufacturing the co-cured skin, “Yâ€-joint preform, and hat stiffeners as well as the assembly of the subcomponent article are discussed. Lessons learned from the experimental phase are included and related to the full D8 fuselage design.
