Effect of Nanocellulose on the Properties of Glass Fiber/ Nanocellulose/Unsaturated Polyester Resin Composites
Abstract
Glass fiber/nanocellulose/unsaturated polyester interfacial adhesion was explored as a bottom up approach to determine the optimum method of adding nanocellulose in glass fiber-unsaturated polyester composites. The interfacial adhesion, in the form of interfacial shear strength, was determined using microdroplet debonding procedure. Two approaches were followed to introduce the nanocellulose in the glass fiberunsaturated polyester system: add the nanocellulose as a coating on the glass fibers or add the nanocellulose directly in the unsaturated polyester matrix. Different types of nanocellulose (cellulose nanocrystal and cellulose nanofiber) and surface functionalization of nanocellulose were employed in this study. Preliminary results showed an improvement of interfacial adhesion with cellulose nanofiber coated glass fibers and nanocellulose in the polyester matrix.
