A Study on Failure Behavior of Unidirectional Carbon Fiber Reinforced Thermosetting and Thermoplastic Composite

Abstract


In this study, the morphology of fracture of unidirectional (UD) carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) has been studied to categorize the fracture characteristics for several types of loading. Polyamide 6 (PA6) and epoxy resin as thermoplastic and thermosetting matrix were used to fabricate UD CFRPs plates through compression molding process. Specimens were tested in tensile and bending tests, both in the axial and the transverse direction. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used for the fracture observation. Fracture features characteristic of each failure mode were identified.
