A Shell-Beam Modeling Method for Crash Simulation of Thin-Walled Composite Tubes



There are extensive studies tried to model composite material tubes under axial impact. However, very few of them is able to predict both failure morphologies and force-displacement responses of a crushing tube. In order to solve this problem, this study proposes a new modeling technique, the shell-beam method. Essentially, this method enhances shell elements with real out-of-plane properties with beam elements. Both one element tests and tube crash tests are performed to fully evaluate this method. An in-house material model, Enhanced Continuum Damage Mechanics (ECDM) model, is used in this study. It is proved that the shell-beam method is very effective in terms of conquering the defects, like instability, of some traditional elements.
